Mumble-Y-Peg

Every young boys’ outside game I recall had the primary goal of totally humiliating your opponent or mock beating the hell outta him. Eg the aforementioned ( I like that word). Fox and Geese or Red Rover. One that  focused on humiliation was Mumble-Y-Peg.
The loser of this game was supposed to pick up a peg stuck in the ground with his teeth. Yuk. (There are variations of the penalty that are even worse sounding. ). I can’t attest to how many lads succumbed to that humiliation but most did it to save face (. No pun intended).
You needed a pen knife ( boy scout knife) and some soft dirt that you could stick the knife in from altitude. You need at least two players. Rules vary but each player had to toss the knife and have it stick in the ground using varied tricks. Over the shoulder, back hand and the old Toe, Knee, Chest, Nut ploy that had the player flip the knife from each of those appendages.  Player 1 would go through as many tricks as he could until he missed.  Player 2 just had to beat that number.  How many rounds you played depended on your rules.

If chewing the peg disgusted you, your teammates could give you an alternative like allowing teammates to throw a pink “Spaldeen” ball at you some number of times.  Always.something humiliating but not too painful.
How’s that for a total waste of time.
