For starters, my goal for any decision is NOT what is the most cost effective or what is the most “sensible.” So, what IS my goal? How about the least hassleful (is that a word?).
My most precious and scarce asset right now is time. I don’t want to spend it doing things I hate, like haggling over a price. Here’s my latest example.
My 2019 Nissan Rogue had severely cracked tie rods and damaged bushings. (Don’t ask).
My son did some research and says my Rogue should bring $9900 trade in value. A new Rogue sure rides nice. BUT, the service dude says my Rogue is in great shape (except for tie rods and bushings of course). I have 82000 miles on my Rogue, and same service dude says I could (note “could”) get another 80000 miles out of her. Hmmm what to do? New Rogue or 2019 relic?
- Cost to repair: $2600.
- Cost for a brand new Red Nissan Rogue: $34000
- Keeping my car and avoiding the hassle of negotiating a good deal, financing, and futzing with a new car payment and updating license: priceless
Buying a new car, not only makes me go through the “deal” process I hate. It also requires dealing with SCDMV for new handicap plates. I’m still a disabled veteran with pacemaker/defibrillator.
Fixing the tie rods and bushings ain’t cheep, but I pay and drive away. No hassle.
Hopefully, I’ll continue to enjoy my 2019 Rogue. It drives real smooth on its new tie rods and bushings. But it ain’t new. Oh well. How long before the next big decision? Enuf.
