That’s easy. October, 1947. I was 8 years old. Everybody was home from the Big War. The baby boom was just starting. “Give ’em Hell” Harry S Truman was our President. And I was a “big” third grader at PS 79 in a place called Whitestone, Queens, New York City.
Something was going on in “my” city, called the 1947 World Series, that everybody was talkin’ about. TV was very scarce.
It was the Major League Baseball championship, best Four outta Seven series, between the New York Yankees (da good guys) and the Brooklyn Dodgers (da Bums). The two best baseball teams in the whole world were from my city and were playing against each other.
I haven’t the slightest idea why, but I was an avid Yankee fan and, therefore, I hated the “evil” Dodgers. My hero was Joe Dimaggio, the iconic Yankee center fielder.
Two bad things happened to my Yankees during that exciting Series. But the main thing I remember is that the Yankees won that series in the 7th and last game.
The first “bad” thing was the 4th game of the series. A pitcher named Floyd (Bill) Bevins (ever heard of him?) pitched 8 2/3 innings of no-hit baseball and lost. How could that happen?
Well, it was a sloppy no-hit game. Bevins had walked a bunch of folks and it was a 2-1 game with Brooklyn runners on first and third. There were 2 outs and it was the ninth inning. One more out and Bevins would have pitched the first no-hit World Series game. Instead, a player I always remember and hated (not really) Cookie Lavagetto came to bat. He hit a double, scoring the two men on base. Ergo, da bums won the game 3-2. And Floyd Bevin’s career was over. That was game 4. The Series is now tied 2-2.
The next bad thing for my Yankees was in game 6. My idol, at the time, Joe DiMaggio, came up with 2 men on base. He hit a ball that was rocketing out near the Dodger bullpen. A new lil guy name Al Gionfrido was in Center Field. Ever heard of him? He made a miracle catch robbing the Yankee Clipper of at least extra bases, maybe even a homer. That won the sixth game for the Dodgers, putting the series at 3-3 and causing game 7 which my Yankees won, making my totally irrelevant wishes come true.

Other players I liked a bunch and actually saw play were
Allie Reynolds, Vic Raschi, Tommy Byrne (pitchers)
Tommy Henrich, Charlie Keller and Johnny Lindell ( outfielders) Phil Rizzuto, Snuffy Sternweiss, George McQuinn ( infielders) and Yogi Berra ( Catcher)
