Short answer— Because Grandmommy’s roots are here and she loves this city. And, because, Granddaddy, a self righteous latchkey kid from New York, also loves this city and has wormed his way into those Charleston roots. We have been here since 1989 and have no intention of leaving.
Let’s briefly explore our journey from August, 1964, when we said, “I do” to the present.
We started right here at Charleston. I was stationed at Charleston AFB as a C-130 and C-141 navigator. For the next 27 years the US Air Force controlled our movement. Our first two children, Christine and Jim were born here in Charleston.
In 1967, I was accepted and assigned to Ohio State University in Columbus to earn an MBA. In 1969, with my MBA, I was assigned to navigate EC-47’s in lovely, green Vietnam. Marjorie and kids came to Charleston for that year.
1970-1974. Air Force Accounting and Finance Center, Denver, Colorado. Great job managing MIA/POW pay accounts.
74-77. Scott AFB, Illinois First session. Worked at HQ MAC (now AMC) in Plans/Programs. Kids in elementary/ middle school.
77-80. USAF Airlift Center. Pope AFB, Fayetteville, NC. Did testing of new airlift equipment and tactics. Briefed results of tests to senior MAC staff
80-81. Army War College, Carlisle, PA
Loved the year and location. Close to Hershey, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Dutch/Amish areas. Great year.
1981-1989. Scott AFB Second session
Career apex was serving as Command Comptroller for MAC between ’85 and ’88.
In 1989, I came to Charleston AFB as Deputy Commander Resource Management. Finished Air Force career here and retired from the Air Force in 1991. Moved to 52F South Battery and we’re still here.
Had a wonderful 2nd career 10-year opportunity at Trident Technical College to help local companies by training their employees and improving work processes. Retired from Trident in 2004. Practiced survival with lovely wife, Marjorie till now.
